Remote Desktop Connection Explained

Basically, remote desktop connection works by redirecting the information from one computer to another. The person who wants to access a remote machine needs to install a client application, which facilitates the transition.

On Microsoft Windows, for instance, you can take control of a remote computer through Windows Remote Desktop – a remote desktop tool based on the company’s proprietary Remote Desktop Protocol(RDP).

The remote desktop application tells the RDP to send information to a new location and then translates the RDP data into corresponding graphics information for display on your local screen. As a result, you’re able to interact with a remote computer as if it were a local machine.

With that, remote desktop software allows you to:

  • Access your home computer from any location
  • Connect to your workstation while traveling
  • Host online presentations and demonstrations
  • Fix computer issues remotely
  • Help friends and family with their computer problems when you’re miles away from home
